Several years ago a colleague I was working with at an Oil Refinery in west Wales was explaining to me why he believed that anyone who questions the current scientific truth that the Earth revolves around the Sun is either insane or stupid.

After he finished explaining to me that the evidence was irrefutable since one only has to look up to see this truth is self-evident and anyway; scientists know what they are doing and if they say it is so...it must be so...

I asked him "Have you ever heard of the Michelson-Gale Experiment?"

"No" says he.

I then explained to him that these two very well respected British scientists carried out a very large number of experiments back in 1925 to find conclusive evidence that the Earth is not stationary as many scientists and lay people were saying.

The object of the experiment being; to discover once and for all; if the Earth is stationary and therefore the Universe revolves around it ... or it is the Earth which revolves around it's poles and the Universe only appears to be moving.

At the same time they would be able to refute the evidence of a previous experiment carried out in 1913 known as The Sagnac Experiment which appeared to prove the Earth is indeed stationary. 

This followed an experiment in 1871 by the [then] Astronomer Royal George Biddel Airy which showed the Earth is stationary and the heavens move.

What I suggested to my colleague was, that it might be possible that because he was not familiar with this genuine, indisputable scientific evidence provided by very well respected scientists then his own absolute belief about the relationship between heavenly bodies and Earth is questionable.

And should he not look at this evidence himself and decide whether or not he still maintains that those scientists who did the work and anyone who accepts their evidence are "insane or stupid"?

His immediate reply was; since he never heard of these scientists or their work and the current truth is that the Earth revolves around itself and the Sun; the new scientific community had obviously proven these old mad ideas to be wrong and he therefore saw no need for him to consider them.

The Earth revolves around the Sun and that's that. End of discussion.

As some wise person said...There are none so blind as those who refuse to see.
